1960 - In the Kew shot the teacher was Ingram as I always remember his habit of licking his lips and he was my form teacher in both the 3rd and 4th year. I'm sure we went to Kew in the 3rd year so that would have been 1960-61. The boy in the back row with the camera is Alan Woodley. The boy with his hands on his hips is John Agg who came with some of us who passed our 11 plus to St Olaves but he left after a week as he didn't fit in. At the right hand end of the back row is me. Middle of the front row is Ian Birkby kneeling to the right of him is Peter Llewellyn.

Hi My name is John Eland and I taught at John Evelyn 1970 -1973. It was my first teaching job having Graduated from Goldsmith's College in New Cross. My Headmistress was Shirley Broad she and I got on GREAT because she was from South Africa and I was born in South Africa and raised in Rhodesia( No NOT Zimbabwe RHODESIA). I become GREAT friends with the Mooneys and Pat and I did a LOT of work with guitars and music PAT more than I BUT I did a lot of singing in my Class Room I also had a LOT of pets. I kept Rabbits and Guinea pigs loose in the Class Room ( Poor old Mr Mooney had to scrape animal dropping off the floor) I also kept Ferrets and Rats in the classroom much to the consternation of some parents. But before I got there pets in the Classroom did not fare well BUT I had no problems with mine. I also played SCRABBLE with probably the deadliest teaching aid EVER a scrabble board I made myself with nails sticking forward to accommodate the letters The Board stood on the blackboard ledge if that thing had ever fallen over I and most of the class would have been impaled LOL. My first year I remember there were triplets at the school who had an older brother who was ALWAYS in trouble the only name I can remember is Peter (Yup old age is creeping up on me I am getting forgetful) I often wondered what happened to the children I taught and if I had any influence on their lives. We sang a LOT of Peter Paul and Mary songs along with some Cat Stevens and Shel Silverstein. I was the worst singer in the world BUT no one ever told me to SHUT UP I figured they didn't realize I couldn't sing but now I think they were just too polite. Thank you for this site it is a wonderful remembrance of a bygone era. Would love to hear from anyone who passed thru my classroom and know if I actual had a positive effect on their lives

This photo was taken on a class visit to Hampton Court Palace circa 1953, only the boys are pictured. I don't know where the girls were at this time. This is the same class as pictured in the class photo submitted by Anne Tibbenham and most of the boys are in both. I recorded all the names at the time so here they are: Back row (11 pupils): Leonard Lamas, Ronald Cook, Walter Morley, David Stead, Terry Jones, Edwin Tebbutt, Anthony Redhead, Jimmy Herbert, Michael Jones, Alan Bonner, Barry Stead, Middle Row (6 pupils): Michael Parr, Robert Green, Michael Gittings, John Springate, William Pook, Michael Jobbins, Front Row (7 pupils): Malcolm Bullions, Charles Bender, Ernst Whittington, Robin Dalton, Roger Hayward, Patrick Dally, George Hore. I cannot remember how we got to Hampton Court but we seem to be having a good time! I have one other picture to post, and when I can find them some of my sister Suzanne Redhead at school.

This picture is of the team that represented John Evelyn circa 1953 at a sports event that took place, I believe, in Baker Street Central London (this is what my memory recalls but I may be wrong!) The middle line wearing sashes actually took part, the rest are reserves, I think. Mr Chesterton is the master in the middle of the back row. I will name as many of the pupils as I can: Back row ? ? ? David Stead ? Mr Chesterton ? ? John Springate, Ernst whittington. Middle row: ? Michael Gittins, Dennis Carroll, Colin Herbert, Jimmy Herbert (holding trophy) Dennis Bonner, Robin Dalton, Charles Bender. Front Row: Walter Morley, ? William Pook, ? ? Anthony Redhead, Michael Jobbins. It would appear that we won the event. On trhe subject of sport, JE had a school football team and I was lucky enough to be captain. Most games took place on Blackheath and I can remember catching the No 53 bus from Gardiners Corner, Deptford Bridge to Blackheath.

Another picture. From a day trip to Kew gardens, I think in 1959. I can remember a few names of people but not many. the one with the teacher (Mr Chesterton) has Linda Llewellyn who is second on the left from Mr Chesterton, the girl with the glasses is Sandra Allchorne and the girl on her right is Pauline Jenkins. I think the boy behind her is Trevor.
