I lived at number 22 Alverton Street, 5 doors from the school. There were two shops opposite on the corners of Dorking road. The one on the right hand side as you look up Dorking road was Normans, an independant electrical store & on the other corner Parkes, a small general store. There was also another shop called Lilly's run by Mr & Mrs Lilly, it was a proper old fashioned shop where I would buy a bag of split peas for my pea shooter, also lucky bags & jubbly's. It had a Minha bird (that talked) behind the counter.

Hi,I attended the School in the fifties. We left the area for Forest Hill in 1959 my having been there for most of my 1st year. I also went to Grynlin Gibbons.I obviously remember some things especially as i had two older sisters who were 2 & 4 years my senior. I do remember the Sun-Flowers that crept over the wall near the School. funny what you remember?. We lived in Grenville house, King Street. There were tall 3 storey houses with basements where my older sister would play with her friend. There were also many small pre- fabs' we used to pass, thru the back from Kings Street to Sayers Court (to see the FROG). A friend who i saw at School lived there & i met him again whilst at secondary School in Beckenham some years later.I learn't to ride my 1st bike in Twinkles Park at 5yrs. I still feel drawn to the area even after 58 yrs old. Progress?.
