I was a pupil at John Evelyn school between 1953-1958. The Head mistress then was Miss Kathleen Loring who was very religous and wore cloths that were very 1930s. We also had a headmaster Mr Chesterton who also did all the sports for the boys playing football with other schools etc. When I went to the school the large classroom on the gound floor still had an open fire! No health and safety there I fear. My main memories are of Mr Ingram, I think his first name was Leslie but don't quote me. He used to give us talks on how to keep bees and we actually had hives on the roof of the building. When the bees swarmed in early summer lots of the boys would get stung because the prevailing wind swept towards the boys playground. We made the labels for the jars of honey and spun it out of the comb. Then we would market it and sell it at home. Some of the classrooms still had the very old iron desks with china ink wells. The school was so overcrowded that the Infants hall on the ground floor had curtains put up to make an extra class room. The Toilets were still the old Vicotrian system of six seats and a channel that flushed them when the janitor felt like it. I have pictures but only of the various classes I was in also a school play. At the time I did not appricate how good the teaching was in such poor facilities. Good luck with your web site.

I was appointed resident Schoolkeeper at the school around Easter 1977 until 1986. Mrs Shirley Broad was the Headteacher of the John Evelyn Junior School building (old Victorian building) and Mrs Anne Rosen was Head of the John Evelyn Infant School which was housed in the new building opposite (across the dividing alleyway. Over my nine years both schools went through a period of change in that the schools were almalgamated into a Junior Mixed and Infant School under one Headteacher, Mrs Anne Rosen. Due to the falling role of the school, the junior children and staff moved into the new building. The Old Victorian building was then re-occupied by two different educational centres. The top two floors were occumpied by South Greenwich Adult Education Institute and the ground floor housed the John Evelyn Support Unit, a special unit for secondary aged students who had problems learning in mainstream secondary schools.. I am afraid I cannot remember the names of any of the teaching or other support staff beside one of my predecessors Pat Mooney, who use to teach guitar lessons to children in the old junior school. Sadly Mrs Broad and Pat Mooney have now passed away. I left the school in 1986 just before it closed down completely I have no idea what happened to Ann Rosen. The school building was then occupied I beleive by Grinling Gibbons nursery and I think still is.
